Romania set a new record on Tuesday ( March 20 ) for the longest wedding dress train, at 2,823 meters, which was worn by 17-year old Romanian model Emma Dumitrescu. The creation belongs to Andree Salon fashion house. A hot air balloon carried Emma and her record breaking dress above the streets of Romania’s capital city, marking the opening of this year’s biannual ‘Marriage Fest’ wedding fair in Bucharest.

It took 100 days to stitch the train and a total of 10 seamstresses worked to complete it. The record breaking wedding dress used 4,700 meters of taffeta, 5.5 meters of Chantilly lace, 45 meters of lining, 1,857 sewing needles, and 150 spool threads.

The ‘Marriage Fest’ organizers said that they launched this initiative under the slogan ‘If the Netherlands don’t allow us into Europe, we will remove from them the Guinness Book of World Records’. This comes as a sign of protest against the Netherlands opposition on Romania’s entry into the Schengen area.

In April 2009, ‘Marriage Fest’ set the first Guinness World Record for the longest train of a wedding dress, of 1,492 meters, but the Netherlands beat this record in December 2009, with a train of 2,448 meters.
